My Perfect WorldThis was a story I wrote earlier in the semester to demonstrate my idea of a perfect world.
[Here's the link to the Google doc] I felt very comfortable writing this story because the question of a utopia is exactly the kind of thing I think about. I also really enjoy writing short stories and just about anything fictional. I think I did fairly well subtly incorporating the ideas into the story using dialogue and description. What I would probably improve on is character development, because they could really use more defined personalities and maybe a more complex history. |
Political CompassI took a quiz [here], and it told me where I fall on the political compass. This is a picture of the chart. I fell at -3.00 on the Economic Left/Right scale and -1.95 on the Social Libertarian/Authoritarian scale.

Current Issue: "Schmeat"
http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2013/06/06/technology-schmeat-in-vitro-meat-burger.html
So, according to this article, new “lab-grown meat” will soon be unveiled. While there has been much controversy over “Schmeat,” I think it’s a wonderful idea. I was raised as a vegetarian, never eating any meat products. I’ve always has to rely on soy and eggs and soy for my protein and even then, getting all the healthy nutrients can be difficult at times. Even so, I am against the consumption of meat. I feel it is unnecessary for the world because there are so many other ways to provide for ourselves. Each cow, each chicken, each pig... Their lives should be valued. I also feel that eating meat is bad for the environment. The space that is used to keep the animals and let them graze could be used for agriculture and a lot of energy goes into processing the meat. I also believe that vegetarianism is more beneficial than not. There is less chance of contamination and chemicals in the food. With the lab-grown meat, no one would have to worry about the loss of life or the negative environmental impacts. We won’t have to worry about extra hormones given to the animals or the quality of the farms they came from. I think the idea of lab-grown meat it revolutionary and will help solve hunger problems throughout the world.

How I'm Active in the Community
Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the most active citizen. In fact, I'm pretty selfish overall. The things I care about most are my school, my family, my friends, my interests and my personal health. Most of the things I have done, I did to benefit myself. But that doesn’t mean I don’t get involved in anything…
First of all, I’d say I’ve been involved a fair amount in the arts community thanks to my mum. I go to a lot of art shows, I’ll help her transport her things, man the food tables at exhibitions etc. I offer to help out and when I do go, I will support local artists by buying their work or at least signing the guest books. I try to get at least something like a necklace or some handmade soap or some accessory that someone made.
Secondly, I have done some volunteer work. Before grade 9, I spent a week at the YMCA Day Camps with the Junior Camp kids. I did things like open their pudding cups or take them to the washroom or play with them in the sandbox. It was a lot more work than I expected, but I think it was a good experience. I also recently helped out at the Waterloo-Wellington Children’s Groundwater Festival teaching kids about the importance of water conservation. I did this with my geography class, but it’s still something. :)
I’m also involved in the recently-formed Cambridge Teen Anime Club. I bring my laptop when I need to and help out with the setup. When I do get some more anime DVD’s, I’ll bring those to play. My guess is I might do some baking to bring stuff for the club soon. I was hoping to meet some people, but I seem to know everyone already anyway. That’s alright though; we’re all trying to get more members to the club. I also joined an aikido class and although I’m not sure that counts for anything, I met a lot of really cool people and am more confident out in the world because of it. I’m hoping to get out a bit more soon and be involved with more clubs and activities.
Finally, there are lots of little things I do to contribute and even if they’re small and don’t matter much in the big picture of things, everything makes a difference. Putting the few cents change from Tim Hortons into the donation box, giving someone directions to the mall, holding doors for people… things most people should do anyway. I’m going to try and improve but I think I’m still doing okay.
